Am I a “Betty,” “Peggy” or a “Joan”?

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

As if I need a reason to buy another dress, the theme to the fancy dress party at Bloggers in Sin City this year is Mad Men! The party is being held at the beautiful Chateau Nightclub and Gardens at Paris (regular haunt of many a Kardashian!) and I cannot wait to see the sartorial choices with which my fellow clever and trendy bloggers adorn themselves.

Since the announcement of the theme for this year’s outing, I’ve been scouring the Internet for options. My first stop was Mod Cloth, where I found my Black, White, and Gold party dress last year- a scoop necked, short-sleeved, fitted matte gold sequined number that was beautiful but made me feel like a HULKING GORILLA all night. Not exactly the most comfortable dress to dance the night away in the middle of the desert in May.

Once again, Mod Cloth has a number of options, but it’s “the place” for this sort of thing and I worry about choosing a dress that someone else will also be wearing. I still adore this dress and this dress by Eva Franco and may decide on one of them for my brother’s wedding in South Carolina the weekend after BiSC.

Shirking these certain but obvious beauties, I set out to find other online purveyors of vintage styled dresses. If you haven’t found yours yet or are simply looking for dresses in that vein, I highly recommend checking out this seller on etsy (and others like her) who will custom sew based on your measurements , the real vintage options available from this shop (I found THE PERFECT DRESS but holy hell people were tiny back then! A 24 inch waist, really? Amazingly, the dress has since sold.), or Unique Vintage, where I found three dresses. According to Fed Ex, the dresses should be here later today, which means I’ll be promptly stripping down to my knickers the moment I get in the door in hopes that one of them fits my petite yet suddenly curvaceous frame. I turned 30 and got hips- yay?

If you’re so inclined, I’d appreciate love you forever if you gave your input on which dress you like the best. Thank you! By the way, how effing excited are you that Mad Men comes back in only four more weeks?!

Dress #1:

Houndstooth with a cute cap sleeve.

This dress is spot on Mad Men with the houndstooth pattern, fitted silhouette, and length. My concern is: will it pull across the hips in an unflattering way? Will I look like a squat hobbit jammed into a too-tight, patterned dress? Will people look at me and think, “awwww, how sad“? Heels and Spanx are key with this one.

Dress #2:

I just love this dress. Love love LOVE it.

This dress is supposedly vintage 1940′s, which technically should take it out of the running for this here Mad Men shindig, but I just love it. It was the dress that hooked me on this web site and required purchasing. There’s just something about it: feminine yet sexy, navy not black, a dress that wants you to walk with a wiggle and dance until your feet hurt. Speaking of, I’d definitely go a different route with the shoes.

Dress #3:

This dress begs to be twirled.

For all you Glee fanatics out there, I’m informed this dress made an appearance on the show at one point. Which, doesn’t exactly sell me on it because Lea Michele is inexplicably annoying as fuck and I refuse to ever watch the show. BUT, how fun is this dress?! The shape of the skirt is supported with a crinoline that I opted to purchase as well because who wants a deflated swing dress? Not this girl. I hope Wendy is ready to twirl her fluffy paws and tail later tonight!

  1. You already know my thoughts on the dresses. Can’t wait to hear how they fit when you get home! :) I haven’t even begun looking.

  2. I love dress #2!

  3. I vote 2 but I would totally bone whoever wears 3 in an instant.

  4. I’m a big fan of dress No. 2!

  5. These are all awesome but my fave is #3.

Also, thank you for the links! I’ve been scouring ModCloth also but it seems like that’s the automatic place to go so it’s nice to have some other places to look. You rock!

  6. And now that I’ve visited Unique Vintage again, I’m reminded that I spent an entire afternoon one day not long ago browsing through all their stuff. Looks like I’m going to have to do it again – with a mission this time, of course!

  7. All of them are cute. I vote for #1.

  8. I TOTALLY SEE YOU IN #3 hands down, not a question. And I see myself in #1. I have been thinking about this lately too. Glad to see I’m not the only one thinking months in advance…

  9. I vote dress #2, its chic look and good cut. I think the houndstooth dress is too much houndstooth. That print needs to be a skirt or jacket.

  10. I like number 2 and 3.

  11. #3! Not only will it look adorable on you, but I want to twirl with you!

  12. It looks like the general consensus is for #3! After trying them all on last night, I can tell you that #1 was too small in the top (yay boobs! that’s NEVER happened before!), #2 was very snug in the hips but flattering and I love it and already have hung it with care in my closet, and #3 was perfection. I LOVE it and am definitely wearing it for the Mad Men party at BiSC! Thank you so much for all of your help! Now, what are you going to wear?

P.S. Here’s a pic of me (pls ignore the gross looking building’s hallway) in the red dress: http://ow.ly/i/tvoD

  13. Love #3!! Looks great on you. I was going to vote #2 because its so cute so I’m glad you have it in your closet at least! I already know I’m a Joan – red hair, curvy, sky high heels – love it! Just need to find the perfect dress….

  14. You are so on it with this dress business. I haven’t even thought about what I’m going to wear yet. Definitely bookmarking this post for future inspiration though!

  15. OMFG I love all of these dresses! And I think you kept the right ones. They will look so fab on you.
