With This Ring, I Thee…Caveat
Tuesday, February 16th, 2010I got a ring for Valentine’s Day.
Well, first there was a kickass cheese platter which brought great joy to my heart. Then, there was a home-cooked meal involving Cornish game hens, pastas, and cheesecake. And after, there was a little blue box.
I sat there feeling both genuinely surprised by “a serious gift” on a day that’s really kind of stupid actually- a day that I could barely even remember- and a bit guilty for the lame duvet cover I’d just given to him (What?! It’s a present for a place I hope we’ll spend more time together!).
Before I could untie the white satin ribbon, however, there were explanations. He began to hedge, to hastily try to avoid the pitfalls of buying a ring for a woman. I believe there were expressions along the lines of “it’s not a promise or anything silly like that” and “but you never know, maybe someday” and such.
I had to smirk at his near comical concern. He really needn’t have worried. Although I’ve never received a ring from a boy before, I know enough to recognize that a ring does not an engagement make. So no. I am not engaged.
Instead, as the silver band fell from the blue drawstring pouch into my hand, I saw something more appropriate and meaningful. Written in lovely scroll were the words, “I love you.”

Hear the resounding collective “aaaawwwwwwww!” Romance and cheesecake, does it get any better than that?
Can I hate you right now? But in a good way? Too cute
that’s so great nic! what a special day. even if it is silly.
Thoughtful. Thoughtful. Thoughtful. Really lovely way to be recognized on such a silly day.
