I got my first Christmas card….

The First Christmas Card

Ha! First!

After dinner one night last week, my boyfriend and I popped into the Walgreen’s. While he hunted down shaving cream, garbage bags, and Zone bars, I wandered into the Christmas aisle and it was….mag-fucking-nificent. Seriously, you people at Walgreen’s- nicely done. Overwrought and sparkly and garish, it was just what a ridiculously early retail holiday aisle ought to be. Awestruck and humming “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas,” I began to touch each plush stuffed penguin and reindeer, sniff each scented candle, and inspect the jingle of each jingle bell. Jingle, jingle, jingle…

And that’s about when he found me….all coked up on Christmas sprinkles and holiday cheer. He proceeded to follow me in my spastic holiday haze. Patiently, he stood by as I dutifully inspected every snowflake-adorned votive, every carol-singing stuffed snowman, every gilt-edged Christmas stocking, glittered holiday bow and candy cane. I adore Christmas. And somehow, he gets it. He understands that if (as he put it) “they’ve wrapped some lights around a stick on Halsted,” we’re going to go stand out in the cold and look at it. (Also, hehehe…..stick…..lights….Halsted.)

So when I opened the envelope and found a Christmas card inside, I knew it was from him. It made me feel not only that he listens to me and knows me, but that he also wants to be a significant part of the things that make me happy. It was one of those things that’s small and perhaps insignificant, but means so much.

  1. aww. i love it when they listen and pick up on these things.
    sounds like a keeper ;)

  2. I know! It made me all girly and stupid, as opposed to jaded and surly like I normally am.

  3. Ahhh, this is so lovely. I’m with you on the adoring Christmas but most males are decidedly humbug. I got my first Christmas card too – from the postal service!
