Who, What, Where, When, Why Blog?

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Much fanciness has been afoot for some time, and now thanks to GDF and the boyfriend (who both not only indulged my ideas but exceeded them), the new Nic Narrates is up and running. To be honest, I never thought I’d see the day.

It’s a bit of an odd thing; how something I started on a whim three and half years ago has grown into what you see now. Odd that it keeps growing, that I somehow always have something more to say, and that I now have someplace really, really pretty in which to say it.

When I began blogging, I had no idea where I would take it, let alone where it would take me. It was just something to throw creative energy into where my job was lacking, a place to whisper my secrets. But over the years, it has become so much more to me.

Through blogging, I’ve met others who share my fears and concerns and joys. I’ve joined in their conversations and celebrated their triumphs, offered words of support when they’ve struggled, been saddened when a favorite blogger’s posts grow infrequent- the first signal of the end (remember Anonymous CoworkerCharming but Single, Surviving Myself, and the latest one to succumb Petite Anglaise?). And I’ve struggled too about how much or how little of myself to reveal, ultimately taking creative license where needed. Throughout it all though, I’ve received so much in return…from complete strangers sometimes. And can I just say? It’s mattered, it’s made a difference.

Blogging has, in a way, brought me back to myself, to my roots as a writer. It’s enabled me to become better known to those in my life offline- even if they don’t read. It’s introduced me to new friends and ones I hope one day to meet. And, remarkably, it’s even brought me my boyfriend, a reader who found his way to me and read in entirety (take heart all you blog crushers out there).

Which makes me wonder about you, the person I haven’t encountered yet, sitting on the other side of the words I type. Although I’ve never blogged simply to garner readers or their comments, I still believe you should comment if it suits you, I’m curious. Why do you blog? What has blogging been like for you? Or if you don’t blog and are purely a reader, what blogs do you read regularly that I’m missing out on?

  1. It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do for us… literally and figuratively. Congratulations on the new space!

  2. you’re right, your new digs are pretty indeed!

  3. Oooh, it’s so pretty over here, I feel like I should take my shoes off at the door or something.

I love finding intelligent and wise people who think about the same stuff I do and who are brave enough to put it out there.

  4. LOVE the new design, lady. :)

Also, I haven’t seen your pretty face since like, March and that sucks.

  5. I love it! So pretty!

I miss Anonymous Co-Worker :( It’s nog season now and everything.

  6. LRC- Oh my god, you’re right! It IS nog season. Sadness. He was one of the funniest bloggers I’ve ever come across.

Ames- I think that’s what it is for me too. When I first started blogging, I didn’t want to reveal ANYTHING. I didn’t even want to write how I talk, which I think is the most important thing about connecting with people on a blog. Fancy words are all good and fine and articulate, but sometimes just saying it like it is can mean the most. Those are always the posts that I appreciate and value elsewhere. And I’m always amazed and encouraged by the things other people share.

Fancy Joy- Thank you! We do need to catch up. Especially given all the behind the scenes drama lately that you aren’t writing about! How about a fancy holiday cocktail outing? I’ll bring candy canes or Christmas cookies or some junk.
