That First Snow

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

I adore Christmas and all that goes with it. You won’t see me joining my neighbor who put his tree up the day after Halloween, but I’m completely onboard with holiday baking and Christmas cards and presents and ornaments and candles and snow globes and candy and music and holiday socks. Normally.

This year it’s different. Instead of hopeful and cheery, I just feel…well, sad. And I find myself going through the motions of writing holiday messages and making Christmas cookies, while scaling back my decorations to just the tree and a single musical snow globe.

My heart just isn’t in it this year and it’s no secret why really. Christmas isn’t Christmas without him. And even though I know that makes me sound incredibly pathetic, there it is. Pathetic or not, it just isn’t the same.

So you can imagine my quiet surprise when the first snowflakes began to fall and I caught myself absently humming “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.”

  1. I had the same experience, but I’m starting to move on. It reminds me of “St. Patrick’s Day” by John Mayer.

And I also caught myself whistling “The Christmas Song” as I was walking back to my car in the snow.

  2. It’s hard to have your hreat into Christmas anD the holidays your first year without someone you used to be with – but your singing that little diddy with the falling snow shows signs of hope!

  3. He feels the same way.
