The Jane Austen Effect

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

My mom and I were having a conversation…

Mom, nonchalant: “That really sucks it didn’t work out.”

Me, disgruntled: “That’s pretty much how I feel about it.”

Mom, meaning well: “I just can’t believe that’s it. Just like that. Over.”

Me, colluding: “…after everything.”

Mom, humoring me: “I have to say, I didn’t think it’d turn out this way.”

Me, caustic: “Yeah, I had a little something different in mind myself.”

Mom, miffed: “Well, that’s it for you, you know.”

Me, off guard: “Yeah. Wait- what? No.”

Mom, hands tied: “We both know that was your best shot. And now…”

And then I woke up.

  1. Ever wake up upset at someone because of something that they did or said to you in a dream?

  2. Laughably, all the time.

  3. Please. Your mom would never say that.

  4. She was pretty convincing in my dream. But then my mother’s never been the Austen fan that I am.

  5. Wonder what she is dreaming about you, Nic.
