A Farewell Between Friends
Saturday, April 21st, 2007I love the feeling of finishing a book I’ve enjoyed. Of turning to its last chapter, its last few pages. I’ll have spent its balance racing toward the ending and then catch myself trying to slow down…as that last……..sentence……………approaches.
I want to linger. I want to savor the characters I’ve come to know so well. I want to live a while longer in their world.
I’ve laughed with them, cried with them, cheered them. I’ve heard their voices as they’ve told the stories that only they could tell. Of their childhood. Of hardships and togetherness. Of dysfunction. Of family and home.
When their story comes to its inevitable close, I find myself bowing my head. I smile knowingly and run my hand lightly over the back cover that first led me on their journey.
I love the feeling of finishing a book I’ve enjoyed. The feeling of parting with friends with whom I’ve just shared an intimiate conversation. Of knowing that we part for now, but will be in memory and but a visit away.

Oh, I love that feeling!! What’s the last book that did that for you?
I finished The Glass Castle last week and was sad for it. It’s a memoir, which I normally wouldn’t take to, but I found it to be both poignant and brilliant…in much the same way as Little Miss Sunshine.
So which book’s ending has left you wanting more?
